Here is something that surprises most parents: kids who name a specific savings goal save three times faster than kids who just save with no target. The goal makes the abstract real. The tracker makes the goal visible. And visible goals get reached.

This free printable savings goal tracker is exactly what it sounds like — a printable PDF your child fills in, colors, and uses to track real progress toward something they actually want. I built it because the generic tracking sheets I found online looked like homework. This one looks like something a kid would actually want to put on their wall.

Download it free below. Then we will walk through how to use it — because the way you introduce the tracker matters as much as the tracker itself.

What Makes a Good Kids Savings Tracker

Most savings trackers for kids fail for one reason: they track money, but not momentum. A child who saved $3 last week and $3 this week does not feel progress — even if they are on track. The tracker needs to show how close they are to the goal, not just how much they have saved so far.

The savings goal tracker inside the WealthSprout Money Kit includes four elements that make it work differently than a standard chart.

First, it starts with the goal. Before tracking a single dollar, your child writes down exactly what they are saving for and exactly what it costs. Not "a toy" — a specific toy with a specific price. This specificity is what creates motivation.

Second, it shows the gap. Each week your child records how much they have saved total and how much they still need. Watching the gap shrink is the motivating visual — not watching the pile grow.

Third, it has milestone markers. Reaching 25%, 50%, and 75% of the goal each get a visual checkpoint. Small wins build the habit before the big win arrives.

Fourth, it has a drawing box. Your child draws what they are saving for before they start tracking. Research on goal visualization consistently shows that seeing the goal — literally seeing it — increases follow-through.

How to Use the Savings Goal Tracker With Your Child

Step one: sit down together. Do not hand your child the tracker and walk away. The first use of any financial tool is a conversation, not homework.

Ask your child one question: what is one thing you want that you do not have yet? Let them think. Help them get specific. Not "Legos" — the exact Lego set and what it costs.

Step two: look it up together. Go find the real price of the thing they want. Write it down. That number is now the goal.

Step three: work out the timeline. If their goal costs $40 and they earn $5 per week, it takes eight weeks. Walk through the math with them — not as a lesson, as a conversation. Most kids find this exciting rather than daunting once they can see the path.

Step four: fill in the tracker. Let them write it, color it, decorate it. The more ownership they feel over the tracker, the more they will use it.

Step five: make it a routine. Every time your child receives money — allowance, birthday, chore payment — do the split first using the 3-Jar System, then update the tracker together. This takes about two minutes and it becomes the most looked-forward-to two minutes of their week.

💡
The Key HabitUpdate the tracker every single time money comes in — not just on allowance day. Irregular money (birthday cash, neighbor jobs) goes through the same split and the same tracker update. Consistency builds the reflex.

What Age Works Best for a Savings Tracker

The savings goal tracker works best for children ages 6 and up — old enough to understand that money is finite and that waiting has a payoff.

For ages 5–7: keep the goal small and the timeline short. A $10 goal over two weeks is perfect. The habit matters more than the amount.

For ages 8–12: goals can be bigger and timelines longer. A $40–80 goal over 6–10 weeks teaches real patience and real math. This is also the age where the compound interest conversation becomes possible.

For ages 13 and up: the tracker graduates into a full savings and investment framework. At this stage the conversation shifts from "saving for something" to "saving as a strategy." The allowance system can expand to include an investing allocation alongside the savings goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my child gives up on their savings goal?

Let them change the goal. A child who switches from saving for one thing to saving for something else is still saving — and still building the habit. Flexibility keeps them engaged. Rigidity kills the behavior.

How much should my child save each week?

There is no right number. The question is: what percentage of what they earn feels meaningful without feeling punishing? Start at 40% of any income that comes in. Adjust from there based on what your child is comfortable with.

What if my child does not have an allowance?

The tracker still works. Any earned income — birthday money, payment for completing extra chores, payment for neighborhood jobs — goes through the same process. The tracker does not require a formal allowance system.

At what age should I introduce a savings goal?

As early as 5 or 6. The goals will be small and the timelines short — but the habit of naming a goal and saving toward it specifically is one of the most valuable financial behaviors a child can develop, and it is easiest to install before the teen years.

Is this tracker different from the one in the Money Kit?

The tracker in the free Money Kit is the Savings Goal Adventure — a two-page visual system that includes the drawing box, the milestone markers, and the weekly tracking grid. It is the full version of what is described here.

The savings goal tracker is not a financial tool. It is a habit tool. A child who tracks their savings toward a specific goal for the first time is building a mental pattern that will repeat — in different forms, at bigger scales — for the rest of their life. That is worth two minutes a week.
